Baking The Bake Off Week 1- Walnut Cake

Welcome back to Alice Adores Apparel. Sorry for the long absence but like I'm always saying in my apologies, work can take over your life sometimes!

Last week saw the return of one of the most anticipated TV events of the year, The Great British Bake Off. Cake week proved (see what I did there!) to be a brilliant start to the series. First round, as usual, was the Signature Bake where the contestants were asked to create the perfect Madeira Cake. Tamar's Pistachio and Rose Madeira Cake was a thing of beauty! He is definitely one of my fave contestants.

When it came to the Showstopper Challenge, we witnessed the bakers epic highs and soul crushing lows, trying to deliver an innovative twist on a traditional Black Forest Gateaux. Who didn't sink a little bit inside when Dorret's Cake collapsed?!

Today I want to share with you my attempt at Mary Berry's Walnut Cake from the Technical Challenge. This cake, though it looks simple, it's pretty time consuming because of the 4 different elements. I doubt I would have completed it in the time allotted to the bakers. I have huge respect for those who presented the top cakes to Paul & Mary! The recipe I followed can be found on the BBC website.

I had great fun with this bake. I wish I had whisked my boiled icing for 2 mins longer though because it turned out a tad grainy. Other than that I think this recipe was a success. It certainly went down a treat when I took it into work on Monday!

I can't wait for the next episode. I wonder who's bake will take the biscuit (cringe!), and who will crumble (double cringe!) under the pressure?! Roll on Biscuit Week!

Thanks very much for checking out my blog! I'll be baking along for the whole series for GBBO so follow my escapades here each week. If you want to check out last year's bakes, click the link below:
